Pampas grass is becoming a popular decor addition for it's airy and natural look. It can evoke peaceful feelings and is a beautiful touch in a living room, bedroom, an office or even as party decorations and in hanging fixtures. I felt so inspired looking at photographs of it, I went out and cut some for myself and this is how I prepared it for my own home.

Pampas grass should be pruned yearly during the late winter and early spring before regrowth occurs. This may be a good time to save some pieces of the plant so that it doesn't stress it out and it will grow more during the spring season. It is easiest to cut with shears, since I don't have any scissors seemed to work just fine too. I cut the stems closer to the base where it would normally be pruned. This is not only better for the plant, but it also gave me more room to work with in choosing how high I wanted them in my house.

Next, you are going to want to take off any extra layers on the stem and let them dry out in the sun. This step is very important! Otherwise mold is going to grow when you put them inside of a pot. Another thing that I did was wiped bleach on the stems to help clean them off. I didn't read anything about doing this, however I felt another step toward prevention wouldn't hurt.

Once they are dried, place them individually upright and spray the ends with hairspray. Hold the can about a foot away and make sure you do this outside when it is not windy. The ends fall apart easily, but this will really help them stay in tact. While it was drying, I carefully fluffed them up with my hands so they looked really full and kept that airy look that makes them such a beautiful plant.

The final step is just to cut them to your desired length according to where ever you are going to put them. I cut them all at slightly different heights to create interest and add more volume. Below is where I chose to place them, there are truly endless choices!

I had so much fun picking out and preparing my own but if you are unable to get to your own plant or don't want the mess, here are a couple of places I found to buy some affordable stems:
Enjoy!
