For my final project in Design 151 Design Materials and Tools, we were asked to create a box out of hardwoods to hold a specific object. I immediately came up with the idea to hold my rendering markers in a way that would display them on my desk to make it easier to see the colors and use them. Our first step was to draw out our design, then buy wood, and build from there. My box consists of three layers, the outside, a second box placed in the base portion, and slots that hold the pens up. I started with the slots and built out from there to make sure everything fit perfectly. The light wood is poplar, I first cut the amount I needed for the slots, then used a planer to make the wood 1/4" thick since I didn't want it to be too wide. I then cut the sizes I needed and used the table saw to make 1/4" slots on the top half of some of the pieces and the bottom half of the others. This allowed me to piece it all together without glue.
The next layer I made out of walnut and simply sized it according to the slots total length and width. I chose a height of 4" because it holds the pens upright, while still allowing them to partially show when the lid is off. The outside is made of the same walnut and poplar. I added wenge in the center as an accent wood. After gluing the pieces together, I proceeded to cut and glue the rest of the box. I then sanded it down with a hand sander and finished the wood with Johnson paste wax because it brought out beautiful colors in the wenge while not making it too dark like many of the other finishes that I tested. Below are some of my process photographs.
